that's my take on that as well.
If no one bids, the frachiser gets the player for 1 year at the franchise rate; if someone bids, the frachiser can outbid and perhaps get a better (or worse) deal on a 3-year package.

it still seems pretty unfair to me that someone will be able to sign him for three years at 9 mil when he turned down 12 for four from me.

B. I'm not stealing him, because you'd either get a more favorable deal by outbidding me, or you'd take Jose Lopez from me.

thats the risk with franchising man. you either risk losing him thru franchising and get compensated for it or you let him go to the FA and risk losing him there.
i tell new owners that are offering players like 13 mill per year for players that they are better off letting him go the FA market and getting him for cheaper there. you have to weigh the possiblility of anyone trying to sign that player for the 12 mill you offered him as an extention when ht eFA period comes around.
